QUEST BOARD.

QUESTS.
SEPTEMBER.
GOING TO LIBRARIAN HELL - ★★ - TAKEN BY ELIZABETH YORK
Heard of the sigils? You're about to. The Brucolac has heard rumours that in the library of the University of Redgate, a manuscript known as the History of Bones is being translated and decoded in utmost secrecy. It deals with the sigils. Steal or destroy the manuscript and deal with the translator...somehow. No more information about the sigils can be leaked to Seelie hands!
This quest may have multiple outcomes according to how you prefer to play it—eg, kill or spare the translator, destroy or keep the manuscript, or even snaffle it for yourself etc etc, but there will be IC consequences depending on your choices!
Rewards: 50 gold, an introduction to the Midnight Court (if you are not already associated), a lockpick charm capable of counteracting basic wards.
QUAKING IN MY BOOTS – ★★
Recent earthquakes have troubled the land around Mair. Locals and earth magic specialists alike say there's something off about them. Go to the small eastern villages on the Seelie/Unseelie border to provide aid, encourage Unseelie support in the area and while you're there see if you can't find out what's been going on.
'Aid' may be medical or military, or might involve gathering food, or helping with reconstruction; whatever you're best at!
Rewards: 40 gold, acclaim and approval around the area (a crucial tactical area in the War of the Shards!), and a travel-ready first aid kit stocked with medicinal herbs and notes on where to find more.
GOD IS HOPEFULLY NOT DEAD - ★
The Brucolac wants to encourage the growth of the cult of Kaio, a young fire god who is considered an easy target in the Godswar and of very little concern. But now the poor wee dear has gone missing. Go out and evangelise, worship etc, but also keep an eye out and an ear to the ground.
Write 1500 words of your character worshipping, spreading the fiery hype and trying to find out what's happened to Kaio.
Rewards: 20 gold, a foot in the door of an exciting new religion, and three enchanted candles: light one in a sealed room for complete privacy of speech!
MAYHEM – ★ - TAKEN BY EGGSY UNWIN
Misdirect! Misinform! Misbehave! The Brucolac wants you to cause a night of havoc and hysteria in Seelie and/or neutral territory and escape as quick as you can; he'll lend you his puca, Accalon, to let you cross leagues in moments and to help you make a quick getaway when the sun is up. You'll also be armed and equipped however you feel necessary, for free. Burn crops in the Cathraon, spread lies in Treun, graffiti up the White Citadel, dress up like a Fox Cultist and give everyone a scare, slaughter innocents, tie shoelaces together or bankrupt businesses; whatever you do best, go out and do it, and keep the Seelie on their toes.
Write 1500 words of pure mayhem.
Please note that despite this being close in nature to the event for August, quest threads can't be used towards boon requirements!
Rewards: 20 gold, keep the gear (decent armour and weapons if you so desire them), and get an invite to the Midnight Court when next it's held.
CLAIM A QUEST BY:
1. PMing me with the quest you'd like to claim so we can hash out quest assignment, then;
2. Dropping the mods a line at the quest request page to let them know you've taken up a quest, for ease of recording!
New rules mean that quest assignment and reporting-in must be ICly logged. Please use the comments on this post to do so; we can talk about this via PM when you claim a quest! EDIT: THIS IS NO LONGER NECESSARY, but for CR purposes we can absolutely do it; just let me know what you prefer.
IC QUEST ASSIGNMENTS / HAND-IN.
SMUGGLER'S COVE - BALEM
HAND-IN
I have everything. I will drop it off soon.
UPRISING DEAD - ELLIE
Forgive my contacting you out of the blue. Forgive also any bluntness. This matter is time sensitive.
In my city, in my religious district, riots brew. The native vampire community is at the heart of them and I must step carefully; though kin myself, this disadvantages me here. They know me too well, or at least know my reputation, and I have not always endeared myself to certain sections of vampire society.
You are known as a friend to vampires, and specifically as an ally to Lainost, something which may stand you in good stead with those at the heart of the unrest. Will you lend your aid?
I am not so much a thieving bastard that I would suggest it if I did not have some reward in mind.
The Brucolac,
Baron of Srathmarbh.

I guess I didn't know I had a rep with the vampires or that you had a bad one. The ones around here mostly just keep to themselves. What did you do to piss them off?
Or... What I mean is I can help. But you just gotta let me know a bit more about what's going on.
If you want to brief me in person, I'm up for it. Or just lay it on me by Raven.
Ellie.

There are four clans of native vampires in the Drabwurld. The Seabhac, beast-wild and close to the land, are my allies; the Tzilani, Morveni and Lainosti I have various complicated relationships with. We call each other 'kin', did you know that? Even if we're from farflung worlds, even if we're strangers, even if we're enemies, we voluntarily involve ourselves in something like family, which makes all political conflicts and truces intensely and intimately personal.
I made a misstep early on in my time here; broke a crucial law of vampire society, and was rightly judged for it. But more recently I was instrumental in taking the vampires in under the Dorchadan banner. Some view this as a terrible mistake, tying a whole race to an Unseelie cause. Others view it as necessary for our survival, or more: a racial struggle for freedom, imperative in our natures, which the Seelie code would subdue. Whichever view one takes, it was a controversial decision. And finally I moved for peace between vampires and elves.
This last is the main problem. Lainost wishes a continuation of the racial war. I do not. We have never really met—only been in the same room once or twice—but in reputation, at least, we are set up in opposition to each other. I don't want to start more in-fighting between clans, but vampires who support Lainost's way of thinking, who want the vampire-elf war to carry on, will not trust me. And vice versa.
The pro-war vampires are, I think, the cause of the trouble in the Shrines, but I cannot risk anything less than extreme delicacy in investigating and resolving the problem. You may have a better chance.
The Brucolac
Baron of Srathmarbh.

Man. That's fucked up. I had no idea... I mean I've known Lainost forever and it doesn't seem like he had some beef with anyone. He was always just kind of chill and mysterious, you know? He never talked about other vampires outside his clan either. Shit. He never talked about the elves either. I guess he just fucking kept me in the dark.
[The letters are tight and almost scribbled. As though her hand was shaking during her writing.]
He's left on a trip now. Can't ask him anything. But what if I try to grab those vampires and get them to come to my spire? We've at least had success getting them to stay and line and not cause any trouble there. At least it would ease the tensions in your city. And add to the manpower at my spire which, as you know, is pretty much the front line of defense if Seelie ever does try to fuck with us.
Because honestly, trying to convince them to drop it with the elves might be a bit above my pay grade.
Wow.
I wrote a lot. Shit.
Sorry. I'm still in.
Ellie.

Good idea. It could work. But be sure that I'm right about their political affiliations, find out how exactly the politics relates to the religious fuckery, find out their names—and then, if you wish to lead a contingent away, do, though we may have to quell rumours that you and I are political rivals of some kind.
The Brucolac.
[He's dropped the formalities; the plan sounds a good one, and he's relieved.]
no subject
It's like he says. The best kind of political negotiations are the kind where both sides leave feeling like they've won. And keeping the front lines strong is a win for Unseelie overall. So win, win, and a win. We can deal with the rivalry stuff later.
And don't worry I won't go in without investigating. I'll let you know everything I find.
-Ellie
GRAVE UNDERTAKING - VOL'JIN
Shit has once again happened. I need help moving some bones and some ashes. Not dead by my hand! Nothing necromantic, purely funereal. And a little investigative.
B

Also, it's briefly amusing to him that the Brucolac has to specify that he wasn't the killer.]
A body and a mystery, eh? You got my attention. Can you speak here, or should I just come to you in a hurry?
no subject
Whatever the fuck is causing people to end up dead on my shores, I want to know about it.
[The attached letter reads:]
milord shardberrer my sonne is the dead man you haue found I liue in tha village malcross you must return hym to me I told hym thiss wold hapen I wish only hisse body for the funral please
yours tinner kivox of malcross
no subject
And this Tinner Kivox, he be sure this body belongs to his own son? Frightful hard to identify someone from mere bones. Though, in that respect, you ask the right person.
I'll come to Strathmarbh posthaste. Expect me the eve of, ah, the third day, say.
Hand-In- Uprising Dead
They're out of the city. We tried to keep it on the down low but I'm sure people will find out they're with me eventually. Nothing is secret forever. Still, we could use 'em so it's a good thing. They're determined to stop the void.
So I guess I was helping you out but you helped me out too.
So thanks.
-Ellie

PAST QUEST BOARDS
JULY 2015
There are riots in Srathmarbh. The Shrines have once more been overturned, and the Brucolac is livid. The vampire community, in particular, seems to be at the heart of the anger. Calm the violence, first off, by hook or by crook—and secondly, find out what everyone's so damnably angry about.
Write 3000 words of your character keeping the peace—whether by force, negotiation, sabotage or anything else—and gathering information on the reasons behind the riots, which are centred around the few White Hart shrines in the area.
Rewards: 40 gold, whatever information your character may unearth about the Godswar, and a weapon or piece of armour of your choice beautifully crafted by Alastair Grunyon, the master smith of the city.
SMUGGLER'S COVE - ★★ - TAKEN BY BALEM ABRASAX
No, don't worry, you don't have to venture into Seelie territory. You just have to take a small boat out onto the River Astar in the dead of night and meet some people with a few entirely innocuous bags of gold and a small, anonymous wooden box.
Write 3000 words of your character navigating their way through this secret journey; be warned, the currents can be deceptive, things lurk in that river, and the people you must meet may have been followed...
Rewards: 40 gold, and access to the next Midnight Court meeting as a guest of the Brucolac.
WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE - ★
The Brucolac wants to encourage the growth of the cult of Kaio, a young fire god who is considered an easy target in the Godswar and of very little concern. Not wanting to make the wee firepup a target or worsen the situation down in the Shrines, the Brucolac wants people to evangelise elsewhere. Doesn't fire love to spread? Travel to Diasbaile, leave offerings for Kaio, and talk to as many people as you can about seeing the light, and the heat, and the destructive all-consuming power of fire. Watch out, though; the increasing tensions between religions in the Drabwurld have made spreading the word treacherous...
Write 1500 words of your character worshipping and/or spreading the fiery hype!
Rewards: 20 gold, a foot in the door of an exciting new religion, and three enchanted candles: light one in a sealed room for complete privacy of speech!
A GRAVE UNDERTAKING - ★ - TAKEN BY VOL'JIN
A fish-nibbled body washes up on Srathmarbh beach. It wears waterlogged robes and some kind of text is stuffed into its belt, but the sea has degraded its writing into incoherence. It has just been cremated and the bones are about to be anonymously interred when the Brucolac receives information identifying the dead man. Bring the ashes and the bones to his grieving father, who lives about a day's ride away, and see what you can learn about the circumstances of his son's death.
Rewards: 20 gold, whatever your character might learn about an aspect of the Godswar, and a ring adorned with a black stone carved into the shape of a wolf's paw. It's a Black Shuck token, and the sight of it will elicit positive reactions from native (or non-native!) worshippers of the Old Dog, who may offer small favours such as accomodation, food or safe passage.
